What is an Armillary?

Brass Armillary Sundial
An armillary sphere is a model of objects in the sky which consists of a spherical framwork of rings of rings. They are centered on the Earth.
Erastothenes (276- 194 BC) invented the armillary from the armilla or circle or bracelet. It's modern use in the garden as a focal point and centerpiece is common.
The flag of Portugal contains an outline of an armillary which was used as a navigational aide for Portugese sailors.

Did you know???

Herbs are great perennials that add fragrance and are useful cooking.  No matter what kind of container or garden you have, herbs should be part of it. People think that you have made something special when you cook with herbs. (And they think that you spent all day in the kitchen!) One of my favorite simple recipes is:
Rosemary Skewered Chicken
Chicken Breast
12 inch of rosemary cut at angle (easier to skew)
Salt and pepper
Cut Chicken breast into 1 1/2 inch cubes. Skew onto rosemary skews. I cut the rosemary at an angle so it is easier to push the chicken onto. Leave the leaves on if you like or you can remove them, whatever your preference. Salt and pepper to your taste. Put on sheet pan in a 375 degree oven and cook 20 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.
Make extra for next day salads. Enjoy!

Did you know???

Most plants and shrubs that you might plant in the ground can be used in containers. This creates a unique long lasting planter that can be spruced up with annuals to freshen look.
Alternatives to the low light boxwoods might be Fatsia, camellias or Varigated Aucuba.
Sunny containers are easier to plant because Palms, grasses, little gem magnolia, or arborvitae.

Fairie Garden Workshop THIS Saturday January 26th from 1-3pm

The Importance of a Fairy Garden
Give you fairies  a place to misbehave. Create a home for the garden fairies which dwell among your flowers. We think just because it's cold outside we don't need to be concern; that the fairies are under ground drinking tea and eating cookies. Not so. It is very important to entertain fairies now or else they could pull up tulips or spread mint in odd places in the yard. They could even dig holes and hide garden tools.
Creating a fairy garden is easy with just a bit of imagination. Call the shoppe and let the Fairy Godmother know that you will be coming.  Bring your own container or purchase one from us. We have more than enough. Pay only for the materials used in your garden. Beware:  It's fun!
